Some scammer scripts are completely no-frills; send money (or gift card) now (which seems to be the Benin Lad standard).
Other scammers have longer scripts that seem to be based on a simple premise. Here's an example.
The scammer's name has been changed; his emails are date-stamped. My comments are in bold.

My name is Mr. Emmanuel Kwame I work with Bond Warehouse Security Company Limited Ghana where boxes are kept as a consignment and family treasure most of this boxes contain money while most contain valuable goods such as diamond and gold, I am about to retire and I need a trusted and God-fearing someone whom I will transact business with as my partner so that I will program his or her name on each of the boxes here in the warehouse to take it out for ourselves as I will clear the boxes out from the warehouse.
I will be retiring from the said company and I will have to give an account of some of this boxes to the official and the official will embezzle it on their own as some of this boxes in my warehouse today has no owner because most of their owner they are dead or are nowhere to be found and most of the next of kin who are in the refugee camp looking for a partner to help them the partners are been confused by the scammers and that is why many of the boxes are in my warehouse today and that is why I decided to use this opportunity to contact you in other to assist me to receive this boxes in your country so that both of us can share whatever we have in the boxes 50/50.
