This morning I got the cash all parcelled up and visited the courier's office. As I've used that company many times before, I'm on friendly terms with several of the staff, and was given some 'off the record' advice we need to consider. I had to declare what was in the parcel (there is a label needing signature) so I said it was £27.6k in cash. Did you know that it's illegal to send that amount of cash into the USA without declaring it? The USA in particular scans all incoming parcels, both with a computer system and often sniffer dogs. Hidden cash will almost certainly be detected and then subject to confiscation. I was however given a suggestion. Some countries check of incoming parcels is less scrupulous than others. Several African destinations have particularly carefree inspection regimes. Additional to that, at certain airports, Cairo International for example, the courier has on-site staff who, over the years, have developed very close and cooperative relationships with the inspection teams. This arrangement means minor difficulties can usually be smoothed out.

So, I need to ask you something. Does your bank have any colleague somewhere in Africa who would be able to receive the package? This would be a big service to me and therefore perhaps, if there is such a person, you would allow me to add a couple of small gifts for them as a 'thank you'. Nothing excessive of course, I'm thinking maybe a couple of iPhones.

Please give me your advice on how we can proceed.

Getting a trophy, or even a rare safari, from a scammer, usually takes some investment of time on both the baiter's and the scammer's side. Time gets the scammer to be heavily invested in the "victim" and the story the baiter is weaving.

The scammer must feel that he/she is just thiiiiiiiiis close to getting their hands on the funds - then, like a real victim, the scammer feels that they've put so much time into the effort of stealing the money that filling in the form, taking a pic, building a pyramid, or even taking that trip is a price that must be paid.

Not to say that some trophies and safaris don't come quickly (some do!), but they are very rare.

I'm looking forward to what Nick does next!

Unfortunately, I've run out of time to get our business concluded, at least for the moment. I have to check in to the hospital for my procedure early tomorrow morning. My daughter will be taking me. The estimate I've been given is that I'll be out of action for about a week. The hospital does have wi fi and I'm allowed to take in my laptop but I don't think I'll be in a position to make much use of it. I might be able to read e mails on my phone, if I'm up to it, but the screen is too small to send anything. This is why I was trying to get all our arrangements finalised.
